Is Yacon syrup another fad or are there any proven and substantial benefits? Every now and then a new product is revealed that is suppose to magically help people lose weight and become healthy.
Yacon is the new one that was introduced to the public by a very well-known TV doctor. But are there any real Yacon benefits or is it just another hyped up product?

One double blind placebo study for example studied the effects of Yacon syrup on insulin resistance and obesity in premenopausal women.
The results indicated a clear reduction in waist circumference, body mass index and body weight. The results also showed a significant increase in defecation frequency and satiety sensations.
This famous TV doctor also did his own study as well in his show. In this study, 60 women who took part in this were given 1 tablespoon of this syrup before every meal for 4 weeks.
No other alterations to the exercise and diet habits were made. The results showed that 14 women out of the 40 lost 5 pounds or more and 29 women reported at least some weight loss.
The average weight loss in the study was 3 pounds. So weight loss is one of the main Yacon benefits. 3 pounds of weight loss is not that much and it could also be due to other factors.
People need to have realistic expectations, especially considering that 17 women out of the 60 didn’t lose any weight at all.
But there are much more Yacon benefits than just losing potentially a few pounds over a period of a few weeks. Studies have also shown that consuming the syrup can reduce bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol, although more research needs to be done.
The plant itself is native to South America, specifically to the Andes Mountains. People in the Andes have been using it for a very long time, mainly because of the high fiber content and valuable nutrients.
Sometimes it is also referred as Peru’s earth apple because it tastes like an apple. The syrup itself is derived from the root of the plant and it is very low in calories, it provides significant amount of fiber, it is sweet and is low in the glycemic index.
Because it is low in the glycemic index, it is broken down into sugars slowly and therefore the spike in blood sugar, which in turn leads to a spike in insulin, is not significant.
