The biggest error that I see if people letting their knees go out past their toes when they go down. Do Not let that happen. It can do a lot of damage to your knees.
There are other moves that can also be beneficial, such as lunges and sumo squats.
If you have more work to do than just a little bit of toning, you are going to also need to focus on nutrition. Lunges and other moves are great for toning the muscles, but you still need to get rid of the fat that is covering your legs.

My thought is that it comes down to portion control, while making sure that your body is getting all of the nutrients that it needs.
