Undergoing liposuction treatment is a big undertaking. There are a lot of maintenance and care that needs to be put into health and mental well-being before and after the surgery. Here are a few ways to prepare yourself before the surgery:
Maintain Healthy Weight
It would be best to maintain a stable healthy weight before liposuction. Do not go on any fasting diets or take HCG or other weight controlling pills.
Eat properly and start an exercise program of walking for at least 20 minutes a day. This will help you to be in a good routine for after your surgery.
Check into some lymphatic massage treatments to have after your liposuction procedure. This will help to promote better drainage and a more rapid healing of your body. It will also improve the results of your surgery.
Determine Your Suitability
Skin quality and elasticity is very important in determining if you are a good candidate for liposuction surgery. If you have folds or not any elasticity left in your skin, you may not be a good candidate for liposuction surgery.
Taking the fat from under the skin may lead to a worse looking body. You may need to go with a tuck procedure instead of liposuction.
Some surgeons may suggest that you take arnica before and after your treatment to reduce bruising and swelling.
Carefully Determine Problem Areas
Your first consultation before any kind of liposuction will be with the surgeon to evaluate the parts of your body in which you feel you want to have the procedure done.
Men and women are becoming more aware of their body shapes and might want to have liposuction treatment on their abdomen, chest, chin, calves, arms, thighs, or knees.
Pictures will be taken of your body and some surgeons have computer enhancement programs that can show you what the final results will look like in the end. You will also receive information on the procedure and the risks involved.
Get Yourself Evaluated
One to two weeks before your procedure, you will be evaluated. Blood tests, a full medical history, measurements and a physical will be taken.
More photographs will also be taken for the latest shape of your body. You may also need authorization from your primary physician, an EKG or other tests before the surgeon will perform your surgery.
Fully Understand Your Consent Forms
You will need to sign consent forms stating that you were given all the information on the risks and results of your treatment. The forms will include information on potential complication and how to care for yourself after the procedure.
Declare Any Medications to Your Doctor
Some people will need to take medications before, during and for a few days after the surgery. If you are on any medication at the time of your consultation, you will be given the proper instructions on whether to continue them or to stop taking those seven days before surgery.
Some of the over the counter medications that will need to be stopped are aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. These may cause bleeding in excess during and after surgery.
Other prescription medications that may need to be stopped are antibiotics, antidepressants and thyroid medications.
Your surgeon will inform you about all medications and what the proper procedure will be for your situation.
On The Big Day
On the day of your liposuction procedure you will have a chance to ask any more questions you may have and will sign a final consent form.
The surgeon will mark your body with a special marker as to where the sections are to be treated. You will be medicated through an intravenous feeding line to give you fluids and any medications to keep you comfortable.
The whole treatment procedure will take a couple hours. The numbing solution is injected slowly. As many as 20 small areas or as few as 4 may be used.
You may even be so relaxed that you fall asleep or you may watch TV or listen to your favorite music. Use compression garments as your doctor instructs for better healing.
