Controlling the Bit in Your Mouth

I met with a client the other day, and we were discussing a problem she was having with feeling a loss of control in her daily life.
Sound familiar? It’s an all-too-common problem than many of us face at one time or another, and can cause some serious problems, such as long-term depression if we don’t face that feeling, and gain control of our lives again.
During our meeting, we discussed the ways in which we are like horses, and our thoughts, like bits in our mouths.
If you’ve ever ridden a horse, you already know that these intelligent creatures are HUGE and sometimes scary. And yet, with a small metal bar in their mouths, horses are easily led in the direction that the rider wishes to see them go.
Even when the horse may try to rebel, he is quickly reigned in and redirected. In the same way, your thoughts very much determine where you are headed in life.
Should your thoughts be filled with worry, doubt, insecurity, you may freeze and not be able to move forward in life. Readjusting your thoughts, using the bit to change the directions, can give your entire life a new purpose.
Looked at a different way, you can imagine your thoughts to be the horse – stubborn, determined to go where they want to go, regardless of your conscious desire to see them move in a different direction.
If you imagine the bit to be your will, you can regain that control over your thoughts and make them what you know to be true, positive, and helpful. You have control over the horse, and you have control of your thoughts.
When you’re a new rider, sometimes you don’t understand how much power you have over the huge animal that you are riding, and in the same way, when beginning to gain control of your thoughts, you may not understand how much control you really do have.
But as you start to reign in control, little by little, your confidence will grow in your ability to direct your thoughts to a more healthy, productive line of thinking. And that, friends, will direct your life in a completely new, positive direction.
It’s All In Your Mind
Using your control over your thoughts looks like:
  1. Being aware of what you are thinking.
  2. Using whatever positive technique or tool you utilize to clear all the negative energy and thought from your body
  3. Being willing to repeat that as many times as necessary.
Let’s be honest, I haven’t always been able to control my own thoughts, and to this day it can be a struggle.
There are days when everything seems to be going wrong, when I have to use every trick in the book to keep my positive outlook on life and maintain my positive direction. And some days, I don’t succeed quite as well as I’d like.
Controlling our thoughts is a human struggle – one that we all face. On these days, having tools available to me, like Emotional Freedom Technique™, or the Tapping Technique, is what saves me.
These techniques have helped me to overcome addition to alcohol, addiction to cigarettes, and various food issues that I have faced, and have enabled me to become calmer, which in turn relieves the need for those coping mechanisms that just aren’t working for me anymore.
Thus, in conclusion, here’s a thought for you today, and my wish for you to say aloud and believe:
Accept yourself
Just for today I will accept that I have all these crazy, judgmental thoughts and I will not judge myself for having them.
Just for today I will clear my thoughts of the reasons for the self-destructive patterns in my life. Just for today I will be kind and loving toward myself, and accepting of my humanity.
Just for today I will accept myself just as I am. Just for today I will accept that God can and will heal the wellspring of my life.
